Session Overview

This one hour themed session on Metamaterials for Health, held at BioMedEng 2026, is sponsored by the UK Metamaterials Network. The Network’s Health Challenge focuses on two key themes:

  • Healthy Living
  • Healthcare
These are supported by sub-themes in Exercise, Wellbeing, Ageing, Monitoring & Diagnostics, and Therapeutics.
This session will explore the emerging role of metamaterials in health-related applications, encouraging cross-disciplinary contributions from engineering, materials science, biomechanics, and biomedical technology.

Call for Abstracts

Researchers are invited to submit abstracts addressing topics aligned with the session’s themes. Relevant areas include, but are not limited to:

  • Biomedical imaging systems
  • Design and manufacturing of bio-metamaterials
  • Exercise and sleep monitoring devices
  • Implants
  • Implantable devices
  • Point-of-care diagnostic sensors
  • Prosthetics and orthotics
  • Protective clothing
  • Sporting goods
  • Targeted drug delivery and treatments
  • Testing and regulation of bio-metamaterials
  • Trauma and first-aid equipment

Session Format

The session will begin with an introduction from the Chair, Dr Tom Allen, followed by a series of short oral presentations. Presenters will be selected from submitted abstracts based on relevance and quality.

Funding Support

The UK Metamaterials Network will cover the conference registration fee for authors whose abstracts are selected for oral presentation in this session. Authors must be members of the network (membership is free) and must include the network’s logo in their presentation slides. . They must also be a member of the BioMedEng Association and meet the early bird registration deadline.
